I - Online Internet Glossary

ICQ ("I Seek You") - A chat program from Mirabilis for Windows 95.It can be set to notify the user when friends are online; it seeks out friends of the user so messages and files can be exchanged.

IIS - (Internet Information Server).Microsoft's Web server software, which uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to deliver World Wide Web documents.It provides functions for security, Gopher and FTP servers, and CGI.

Internaut - A person who navigates the Internet.

InterNIC (Internet Network Information Center) - A group of three organizations which together provide services for NSFNet. General Atomics handles information services, AT&T handles directory and database services, and Network Solutions, Inc.(NSI) handles registration services.Network addresses and domain names for the Internet are assigned by InterNIC through NSI.

Internet - A worldwide network of computer systems originally founded for the US Defense Department but is now also privatized and in use by some BBS systems for data, message, and file transfers on a global scale. The Internet now connects over 60,000 independent networks into a vast global Internet. The term internet spelled with a small i refers to networks connected to one another. “The Internet” is not the only internet.

Interrupt - A temporary suspension of a process.There are two main sources of interrupts: a signal from outside the computer, such as someone touching the keyboard or mouse (a hardware interrupt); or a machine instruction such as a request for input or output (a software interrupt).When an interrupt occurs, the CPU may temporarily gives control to an interrupt handler routine.The suspended process is resumed after the interrupt has been handled. Sometimes a PC will 'lockup' and become unusable when two devices are usig the same interrupt number.

Intranet - A private network inside an organization or company that uses the same kinds of software that you would find on the public Internet, but that is only for internal use.

Instant Messaging (IM) - A chat-like technology on an online service that notifies a user when a friend is online, allowing for simultaneous communication (like talking on the phone, only with text). Once a connection is established files and voice messages may also be transferred between each person's machines.

IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) - A shorthand appended to a comment written in an online forum, IMHO indicates that the writer is aware that they are expressing a debatable view, probably on a subject already under discussion. One of may such shorthands in common use online, especially in discussion forums.

IP (Internet Protocol) - Normally refers to an Internet machine address number or the location number of the machine or computer on the internet.

IP Address - The number string that identifies a computer’s location on the Internet. Typically this is a string of numbers divided by a few periods or 'dots', e.g. 208.45.10.150

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) - A type of interactive communication on the Internet where users chat real-time to each other through a chat server.

IRQ (Interrupt ReQuest) - Refers to a number of a hardware interrupt request by software commonly utilized in drivers for various devices on a computer using MS-DOS. These interrupts are used to keep devices functioning virtually at the same time. Generally each device on the computer must have a different IRQ number to operate properly. Certain IRQs are preassigned in DOS to the keyboard, harddrive, printer ports, etc.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) - A digital phone service that operates at speeds as high as 128 kilobits per second.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) - Usually refers to a online service or bbs system that provides Internet access and services such as e-mail, ftp, websites, etc.
